Native American Exposure to Iodine - 131 from Nuclear Weapons Testing in Nevada

A great deal of work has been done reconstructing doses from Nevada Test Site fallout, yet the unique exposures of Native American communities continue to be neglected. It is possible to estimate the exposures of these communities through a process of collaborative information gathering and analysis. This paper builds on a previous exercise that demonstrated the substantial doses received throu...

The public health implications of combined exposure to multiple sources of 131I released during the Cold War Era: Extension of dose reconstruction to risk analysis and beyond

Abstract. During the past 15 years, doses have been reconstructed to members of the public who were exposed to radiation released from Cold War Era government facilities that supported the development and testing of nuclear weapons. A major component of these exposures resulted from releases of i M I to the atmosphere. This paper addresses the public health implications of the combined exposure...

Managing Terrorism or Accidental Nuclear Errors, Preparing for Iodine-131 Emergencies: A Comprehensive Review

Chernobyl demonstrated that iodine-131 (131I) released in a nuclear accident can cause malignant thyroid nodules to develop in children within a 300 mile radius of the incident. Timely potassium iodide (KI) administration can prevent the development of thyroid cancer and the American Thyroid Association (ATA) and a number of United States governmental agencies recommend KI prophylaxis. Current ...

Special susceptibility of the child to certain radiation-induced cancers.

The carcinogenic effects of exposure to ionizing radiation vary markedly with age, as revealed by studies of Japanese atomic bomb survivors and of Marshall Islanders exposed to fallout from U.S. nuclear weapons tests in the South Pacific in 1954. An increase in cancers of adulthood after intrauterine exposure, as reported in 1988, has not been sustained. After childhood exposure, increases in l...
